This year, people of Banyumas joyfully celebrated their region’s anniversary. As one of its programs, they had one occasion which named Banyumas Extravaganza. Having a theme “Love it, Living it”, Banyumas Extravaganza has encouraged the people to love Banyumas with all culture it has. This year’s Extravaganza was held on April 7th, 2013 as the second Extravaganza after the first one in 2012. It was a long-march cultural carnival started from Jalan S.Parman and finished in Banyumas Town Square.
Student English Forum (SEF Unsoed) as a student activity unit which has widened its concerns not only in English but cultures, has been given the honour, being officially invited by Banyumas Department of Tourism and Culture. Together with city officials and its people, SEF celebrated Banyumas 431st anniversary.
The carnival was opened by a report delivered by its commander Mr. Soewondo (Chairman of Banyumas Department of Tourism and Culture) wearing a very elegant puppet costume. After the report delivery, the Head of Banyumas Region, Mr Mardjoko MM, gave a formal speech and introduced the concept “Purwokerto the City of Holiday”. It was a program proposed by Mr Mardjoko as his final program as the head of Banyumas. People responded it enthusiastically with round of applause.
After Mr Mardjoko gave his addressing, groups of carnival began to come. It was categorized into four groups; Students of School, Sub-Region, Community, and all people of Banyumas were invited to celebrate its anniversary. Many cultural exhibitions were performed. The participants were wearing traditional cloths, Batik, and other cloth made by Batik designed creatively. The women and men looked so elegant. Some of them wore puppet costume too as a form cultural promotion. Lengger (Banyumas Local Dance) was performed by some dancers from one sub-regions in Banyumas, and they invited Mr Mardjoko and Mr Akhmad Husein to dance with them. Spontaneously people gave applause seeing them dancing with profound feeling.
Until the end of carnival, people looked so enthusiastic enjoying the occasion. It was one memorable program that could only be found in Banyumas. As a very effective media of cultural promotion, Student English Forum hopes that this carnival could be an annual program, with more creativity.
